The University on the Niger is a privately owned university that is located in Umunya, Oyi Local Government of Anambra State. University on the Niger is owned and controlled by Diocese on the Niger, Anglican Communion Niger.
The University of the Niger has a deep root before it was initially established as a university by the founder of the institution. The university did not start as just a university in Nigeria in 2023 but started as the Christian Missionary Society (CMS), which came to Nigeria in 1857 under Bishop Ajayi Crowther, who is the first African to be ordained bishop.
The Diocese established by Bishop Ajayi Crowther was then called the Diocese of the Niger, which is the oldest Anglican Diocese in the Southeast of Nigeria. The Diocese made a very significant impact by establishing schools and hospitals in the region and also established the first teacher training college to be established in the region.
The Diocese has recorded success and also the establishment of many educational institutions across states and regions in Nigeria. Prompt them to establish the university in 2018, and plans were commenced to establish this, and finally in 2023 the university was granted accreditation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
